Hilversum/Holland – The winner of the BBC and ESU Public Speaking Award 2012, Vincent van Reen of the Valuas College in Venlo, will travel to London to take part in the International Public Speaking Competition of the ESU. Last week the semi-finals of the Speaking Award were held, in which 16 semi-finalists had to give an impromptu speech to secure a place in the Grand Final the same afternoon. Two journalists from the Young Writers Award judging team gave a feedback session for writers, as did LJ Rich from the BBC’s Click programme for the shortlisted candidates in the Digital Voice Awards. In parallel, trainers from the English-Speaking Union facilitated a workshop for teachers.
The Grand Final was attended by a sizeable audience of participants, their supporters, representatives of the various sponsors, the British Embassy, guests from media companies, GNE members and the press.

Aaron Heslehurst, presenter at BBC World News was the host. The team of judges chaired by the British Ambassador to The Hague, H.E. Paul Arkwright, assisted by a Question Panel, including two previous winners of the Public Speaking Award, had the difficult task to decide on the winner and the runner-up in the Public Speaking Award. The performances by the eight finalists were of an extremely high level.
