Daar liggen de schepen waar hij naar zocht.\u00a0Schepen waarop gewerkt wordt, die ruiken naar vis en teer. Dat is zijn wereld. Hij wilde als het ware de schepen en het water kunnen voelen terwijl hij aan het schilderen was. De kritieken op zijn werk waren lovend. Anton verkocht zijn werk bij wijze van spreken nat van de ezel.&#8221; Anton overlijdt in 1958 in Laren. Na zijn overlijden werd een overzichts- tentoonstelling georganiseerd. Critici schreven weer lovende kritieken: Schotel is een meester die met het licht speelt. Feilloos schildert hij de botters in actie.
